Keyes also has been portraying the role of Santa for the past four years. “I’m a darker-hued Santa,” he says gently, rather than calling himself African-American, or black. Which means that when he visits the Hayti Community Center, in a predominantly black neighborhood of Raleigh, not only the children are amazed, but their parents are, too.
