The Greensboro Farmers Curb Market (501 Yanceyville Street) held its Annual BLT Challenge and Tomato Celebration Day on Saturday, August 11th from 9 am – noon on the lawn at the corner of Lindsay & Yanceyville St. The Battle of the BLT was held to name the Best Market BLT for 2018.
Teams of local restaurants and food enthusiasts created their best BLT. Customers had the opportunity to sample all sandwiches and vote for their favorite BLT. The winner was announced at the end of market, with the title of Best BLT.
Greensboro’s best chefs, restaurants and food enthusiasts compete for this title annually. Melt Kitchen & Bar, 2017’s winner, will be back to the challenge and up against Reto’s Kitchen and a Greensboro Farmers Market team led by Chef Steve Terrill of Red Chair Dinners.
BLT Challenge plates will be available for a minimum donation of $6 per plate, while supplies last. Each plate will consist of a ¼ sandwich/slider size from each competitor, a side of Mt.Olive pickles, and a ballot to cast for the best BLT sandwich. Payment options include cash and credit.
Additionally, customers will be able to sample up to twenty different varieties of tomatoes that will be in season and available for purchase at the Market. Better Boy, German Johnson, Pink Girls, Sun Gold, Cherokee Purple, Husky Cherry, Juliet, and Plum tomatoes are just a few of the popular varieties that are grown by local vendors and currently in season.
Customers will be able to enjoy live music by a local artist and kid friend activities on the lawn. Picnic table seating is provided, and patrons are encouraged to bring picnic blankets. Laura Jane Vincent, a performer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer-songwriter, performed live indie folk music from 9 am – noon on the lawn.
